The course emphasizes fundamental language concepts and listening comprehension. Audio-visual materials are employed to facilitate instructions. Spanish II (EMT) 1 credit This course is designed to further improve the students' knowledge of both spoken and written Spanish through intensive oral practice and emphasis on the more complex structures necessary for personal communication and appreciation of the Hispanic culture will be the pedagogical focus on the course. Prerequisite: Spanish I EMT Spanish III (EMT) 1 credit This course is designed for further improve the student's proficiency in knowledge of the Spanish language. They should be able to demonstrate ability in all four basic language skills in Spanish: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Emphasis on grammar will continue through short stories presented in every unit. Prerequisite: Spanish II EMT Spanish IV (EMT) 1 credit This course is intended for college bound students. The pedagogical focus of the course will be on the syntax of the language, oral proficiency, introduction to Spanish literature, and further exploration of the Hispanic culture. Classes are conducted in the target language with resources to English where appropriate. A term paper written in Spanish will be required. Prerequisite: Spanish III EMT Spanish I (SMT) 1 credit The purpose of this course is to provide a review of fundamental grammar and culture for students who speak Spanish as a native language, focusing on oral and written communication free from English interference. The content should reinforce the students' ability to communicate ideas and feelings, both orally and in writing, and the development of comprehension skills through the study of reading selections. The different cultures of the Spanish-speaking countries should be studied. Spanish II (SMT) 1 credit This course is for Spanish speaking individuals. It reinforces the development of oral and written communication and study of the lives and contributions of well-known twentieth century Spanish and Hispanic-American historical figures, writers, artists, and musicians as reflected in letters, speeches, and biographies. Include this course is practice and natural phenomena, as well as in, memorizing facts and ideas. The cultural focus will be on Puerto Rico, Central, and South America. Prerequisite: Spanish I SMT Spanish III (SMT) 1 Credit This course emphasizes the basic principle of communication through an analysis of different types of media, including library research, data gathering, and the writing of news articles. The course progresses into the study of selected literary works such as prose and poetry as a basic for growth in interpretive skills and vocabulary, with analysis focusing on words of Greek and Latin origin. Research paper, special projects, and oral reports are required. Prerequisite: Spanish II SMT Conversational Spanish I Credit 1 The purpose of this course is to provide conversational abilities in the area of travel, vocational subject, and self-enrichment to the students who do not desire a formal knowledge of grammar or literature as taught in the regular programs. The emphasis is on oral communication and useful everyday expressions. The content should include vocabulary and language patterns dealing with everyday experiences. French I Credit 1 This course is an introduction to the French language and culture. The elements of basic grammar will be studied. It includes the conjugation of the most common regular and irregular verbs in the present and "passe compose" tenses. Students are expected to acquire a vocabulary of about 1000 words including greetings, to give basic commands and to tell time. Aspects of Francophone geography and culture will also be explored. French club participation is expected. French II Credit 1 Through basic dialogues with grammar, this course enables students to further develop their aural-oral competencies. This course is a continuation of French I. Prerequisite: French I French III 1 Credit This course gives a review of grammar, introduces the pasts, future, conditional and composite tenses. Also includes poetry, geography, history and prose of France and the French Caribbean. This course uses the aural-oral method with the aids of slides, films, and recordings. Prerequisite: French II French IV 1 Credit Includes an advance comprehensive review of French grammar and construction. Much emphasis is on idiomatic expression and technical vocabularies. Contemporary literature and the work of well-acclaimed artists are studied. A term paper written in French is required. |
